... the more I learn that the kind of company I really want to work for is the kind of company that knows it's identity, knows what it does well, and isn't out to "prove itself." The kind of place where, yeah maybe I'm not making as much money but things are stable and I'm not mainlining coffee to try and stay sharp because I'm so tired.
Yeah... I need a new job.

kind of sounds like where I am. There will always be busy times though. You have to back up that brand image with quality.

Thats one of the few things I really like about the company I work for. They have a clear mission statement and genuinely believe it/govern according to it.

I feel the same way for the most part.

I'm talking more seriously with the headhunters/recruiters these days. Getting things lined up.
One more meeting like the one I just had and I might do something really stupid.

I don't mind being busy, but I do mind people who don't have to do the work increasing the load of those who do and standing there saying "work harder."
Tell ya what, if this market sector/project is so goddamn important, why don't you help out so that the burden doesn't fall on the poor guys who haven't had a weekend off in two months, and laugh every time they have to "only put 40 hours on your timecard."

Mission statements are more often than not a bunch of worthless bullshit that doesn't really mean anything.
One company I worked at came up with a new mission statement while I worked there, and then gave us each clear plastic blocks with the mission statement etched into them. Talk about some particularly worthless company swag.
At first I had a powerful urge to take it out to the parking lot and drive over it, but then I decided it might cut my tires, and I didn't want to give the mission statement the satisfaction of ruining my day any more than it already had.

I generally agree but I deal with the senior leaders fairly regularly and I can tell you they really believe this stuff. It's easier when you are a hospital system to not have a shity mission

wait, you are only putting 40 hours on yours despite working more, or they are capping themselves at 40?

No overtime here, so while I typically work 50-60 hours over the typical 5 day week, I can only report having worked 40.
Well, technically I could report my actual hours, but there would be no difference in anything.

I'm fairly sure that is illegal.

Even if it's in the employee handbook that "salaried employees are not compensated for overtime?" I'm pretty sure I signed something that said I agreed with the handbook or whatever.

ehh, the employee handbook cannot waive overtime laws. I don't know you situation, but you might want to doublecheck if you are exempt or not. http://www.dol.gov/whd/flsa/index…

I think I fall under "exempt" for some reason.

that makes sense. It's pretty easy to be above that line. I can't imagine working 60 hours in a work week. Maybe I am just lazy, but fuck that. I work 40-42ish hours a week, and only answer emails at home if it is from another country where time zones make it reasonable to get an email at those hours.

Yeah, past tow months I've been in almost every Saturday too.
It's a shame, because the people I work with are generally good folks, but management sucks.
